Place EMPTY and CLEAN plastic containers or tubes marked #1, #2, #3, or #5 in a curbside recycling cart or drop-off site container.

DO NOT place containers or tubes made from #4, #6, #7, or unmarked plastics in a City of Omaha curbside recycling cart or drop-off site container. Place these items in the garbage if you cannot use an alternative option.

Important Note: Mascara Tubes are not easily recycled through traditional methods and should be placed in the garbage.

Where Else Could It Go?

Confirm what type of item you have: EMPTY and CLEAN plastic makeup containers and tubes made from #4, #6, #7, or unmarked plastics can be placed in an orange Hefty® ReNew® bag.

  • Rinse or wipe the container to remove all contents
  • DO NOT include items with metal parts, such as compacts, metallic decor, springs, or mirrors

FirstStar Recycling offers this special program to collect hard-to-recycle plastics in our community. To participate, you can purchase orange Hefty® ReNew® bags, which will be collected through your existing curbside and drop-off site services. Contact the manufacturer of your specific beauty brand to ask if they offer a take-back or mail-in program for recycling old containers. Fees and shipping costs may apply.

The national company, TerraCycle, offers a paid program to mail-in and recycle containers from all brands of beauty products.

Not all containers are the same! Beauty products comes in containers of all shapes and sizes, and can be made from a variety of mixed materials like metal, plastic, and glass.

If you're not sure whether your item can be recycled, use the motto: "When in doubt, leave it out!" It is better to place an item in the garbage than potentially contaminate other recyclables.
