Some Restrictions Apply

M Food Cans Pinched W Lids

ACCEPTED: If Attached or Inside Container

  • Lids from METAL Cans: Place detached metal lids from items like soup or food cans inside the original container and pinch the top closed. Once the metal lid is secured inside the can, place it in a curbside recycling cart or drop-off site container.
  • Lids from GLASS Jars: Metal lids and caps from GLASS jars and bottles can be reattached to their original container. Take GLASS items to a City of Omaha glass drop-off site and place in the PURPLE container.

NOT ACCEPTED: Lids By Themselves

DO NOT place loose lids and caps in a City of Omaha curbside recycling cart or drop-off site container. Because of their small size and shape, single lids often fall through the sorting equipment. Lids may end up going to the landfill if not attached to or pinched inside of their original container.

Lids and caps that cannot be reattached to the original item should be placed in the garbage.

Did You Know

Due to their small size and shape, unattached lids have the potential to fall through the mechanical sorting equipment and end up going to the landfill, or they can cause contamination of other recyclables. After rinsing your recyclable item, screw the lid or cap back on, or pinch a lid inside the can before recycling it.
